Contrapasso
is a small group of renaissance dancers from Denmark and Sweden. Contrapasso means contra-rhythm or contra-step and is originally a dance choreographed by the Italian dancing master Fabritio Caroso in 1581. The dance is naturally a part of our standard repertoire. Contrapasso mostly perform dances from the period of the young king Christian IV of Denmark, that is approx. 1560 - 1620. Contrapasso can, while performing, give a lecture on the dances, the costumes, the renaissance and its customs, and the audience can be invited to dance a few dances with us. Contrapasso takes its repertoire from the European dancing masters of the period: Arbeau (France). Negri and Caroso (Italy) and the English manuscripts. We do however also make our own choreographies to appropriate music, for instance - Pavana. Contrapasso dances dressed in magnificent reconstructions of costumes from the renaissance period.
